Sermon Discussion Questions

Get to know me

The purpose of these questions is to generate responses that are self-revealing and informative. Feel free to ask all of these questions to your group or simply choose the one that best fits your group.

  1. Think of a time in your life when you were wronged. How did you feel in that moment and what emotions did you experience? What actions did you take in response to being wronged and why?

  2. Think of a time in your life when you wronged someone else. How did you realize you were wrong? What steps did you take to ask for forgiveness and apologize to the person you wronged?

Into the Bible

The purpose of these questions is to draw group members into the Bible to discover the truth from passages that were not the primary text for the weekend message.

  1. Read 1 Corinthians 15:58. How does the assurance that "your labor in the Lord is not in vain" encourage faithfulness? How does this verse encourage us to persevere in our faith even when we face difficulties?

  2. Read Philippians 2:12-13. There is a significant difference between “working for your salvation” and “working out your salvation.” Why is this an important distinction to make?

Application

The purpose of these questions is to apply the main points from the weekend message.

  1. Read Jonah 1:1-3. What does Jonah's action say about his trust in the Lord?

  2. Read Jonah 1:7-10. What does it mean to cast lots? Why is casting lots significant in this situation with Jonah?

  3. Read Jonah 1:11-12. What does Jonah's offer sound like?

Read Jonah 1:11-17. Describe the situation the sailors are in. How do you see God influencing and shaping the situation?
