  • Marriage is meant to give us a picture of Christ and the Church. 

  • Marriage also serves as the bedrock for civilization. 

  • Marriage is meant to protect women. 

  • Marriage channels the passions of men toward one particular relationship. 

 

Review Questions

  • “In Scripture, marriage is seen as a lifelong relationship between a man and a woman that is established by a solemn covenant before God.” Wayne Grudem

  • Husbands represent Christ in the way that they lead, love, and care for their wives and children. Likewise, wives represent the Church in the way that they love, submit to, and co-labor with their husbands.

  • God designed marriage to serve as a foundation upon which the next generation can grow and be set up to be successful men and women who get married and provide a new foundation for the following generation.

The Perversions of Marriage

  • Adultery: When the marriage covenant is broken by either the husband or wife through engaging in sexual intercourse with another person. 

  • Divorce: The dissolving of the marriage covenant. 

  • Poligamy: When there is more than one person involved in the marriage relationship.

  • Homosexuality: The sexual union between people of the same sex. 

  • Fornication: Sexual relations between unmarried people.

 

Review Questions

  • Spouses are not to have sexual relations with anyone but each other.

  • Spouses are to remain faithful to each other in all areas of their lives.

  1. In 1-2 sentences, describe the meaning of the 7th commandment. 

  2. What are the ways in which our culture agrees with God’s view of marriage? In what ways does it disagree? 

  3. Is it ever wise for an unmarried couple to live together, even if they say that they will not have sex until they get married? Why or why not? 

  4. Read 1 Corinthians 7:4. Describe what Paul is saying in this passage. How would this work itself out in the relationship between husbands and wives?

  5. How would you try to convince someone who is living in one of the perversions of marriage described in session 2 of why God’s design is better?
